Many dental injuries can be prevented with the use of mouthguards during athletics. Equally as important, mouthguards help prevent concussions and other traumatic injuries beyond damage to the teeth.
Flossing is the best way to remove germs from between the teeth. Toothbrush bristles cannot reach these small areas. Flossing is an important tool for preventing Periodontal Disease and limiting the depth of the pockets between the gums and the teeth. Flossing daily helps prevent both tooth decay and periodontal disease. The flavor and type of floss are unimportant; mechanically cleaning the surfaces between your teeth is the important part! Choose any type of dental floss that best suits you.
To achieve optimum oral health, teeth should be brushed at least twice daily. At a minimum, teeth should be brushed after breakfast and before bed. Brushing after every meal is ideal. The perfect toothbrush has a small head with soft, rounded-end bristles. Toothbrushes should be replaced every three months or less. A small toothbrush head has an easier time getting access all areas of the mouth. Soft bristles help prevent damage to the gum tissue. The American Dental Association (ADA) has given electric toothbrushes their seal of approval; stating that those with rotating or oscillating heads are more effective than other toothbrushes.
Cavities don’t just happen to kids. We all hate to hear we have a new cavity when we visit the dentist, but with the help of a dentist, your mouth can be restored back to health.
Tooth decay is caused when the bad bacteria in the mouth overcome your tooth’s natural defenses.
A healthy mouth contains natural, good bacteria that neutralize acids and help clean up food particles. This bacteria and your saliva also help strengthen teeth by bathing your teeth with minerals that protect teeth from decay.
There are both surgical and nonsurgical treatments your dentist may choose to perform to treat periodontitis, depending upon the condition of the teeth, gums, bone supporting the teeth. A complete periodontal exam of the mouth will be done before any treatment is performed or recommended.
Some common treatments for periodontal disease include:
Your dentist or dental hygienist will gently use a small dental instrument to measure the pocket or space between the tooth and the gums in order to screen for periodontal disease. The instrument gives readings in millimeters. Healthy gums measure three millimeters or less and do not bleed. The periodontal probe helps indicate if pockets are deeper than three millimeters. As gum disease progresses, the pocket between the tooth and the gums usually get deeper.
A composite (tooth colored) filling repairs teeth that are affected by decay, cracks, fractures, spacing between teeth, and worn teeth. The affected portion of the tooth is removed and then rebuilt with a composite filling. Composite fillings are the most widely used today. Composite fillings are tooth colored, and the doctor will pick a shade to match the color of existing teeth. They are very durable, and will last many years, giving you a long lasting, beautiful smile.
A dental crown (or cap) is a restoration that covers an entire tooth surface, returning it to its original shape. Sometimes teeth are too badly broken down to rebuild with a filling. In these cases, a filling would break if attempted. A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure when a filling or other types of restorations will not provide a stable long term restoration.
Dental bridges are used to replace a missing tooth or teeth. They are supported by the teeth on either side of the missing tooth called abutment teeth. A dental bridge will improve your ability to chew and speak as well as your smile. In addition, dental bridges can help keep your jaw bones and face from changing shape, as they tend to do when a person is missing teeth.
The main goal of traditional dentistry is to keep your teeth healthy and free of disease and decay. Cosmetic dentistry takes oral hygiene to a whole new level, with a concentration on enhancing the overall look of your teeth. With cosmetic dentistry, even getting a cavity filled can be an opportunity to improve your smile.
The smile is one of the first things to make an impression on people we meet. It's no wonder that more and more people are turning to dentistry for aesthetic enhancement.
